Man Does Not Live by Bread Alone

Bible Verse(s):

Matthew 4:4 (ESV)

“4 But he answered, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”’”

There is good news in the world. More people are reading the Bible regularly. Statistically, 50% of Christians say they read the Word every week, and this number is up from a decade ago. This is definitely an improvement. However, the problem is that the Word of God should be considered as necessary - no - more critical than regular food. Jesus asserted, “Man does not live by bread alone,” and when he was teaching His disciples, he charged them to add this to their declaration, “Give me this day my daily bread.”

Yes, daily bread implies natural food and resources. However, I would suggest you could also ask God to feed you on His Word every day. Is it that important? It is essential to grow and become the person you were created to be.

In my personal life, my relationship with the Bible has been the key to standing firm in my faith and avoiding sinful and problematic situations. Whether we realize it or not, we are greatly influenced by modern culture, particularly through songs and media. We are constantly being preached a message through the ‘airwaves’ that aims to influence us to make confident choices, specifically investments.

The Word of God creates a standard by which to judge these influences. The Bible is a measuring stick that you need to ‘feed’ on every day. When you ‘daily’ spend time in God’s Word, it helps you counter wrong influences, false teachings, and worldly perspectives. Yes, attending church once a week is important. But building a relationship with God - in His Word - is ESSENTIAL.

Why? His Word is His voice. His Word is His way. His Word is an expression of His personhood. John 1:1 said it like this. Jesus is the Word. So, if you don’t know His Word, do you really know Him?
